Edward Spuler graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in Studio Art. He has worked as a professional photographer since 1996. Edwards work can be seen in various area galleries and has been shown in many seacoast area photography shows.
Having been raised with an importance on history and specifically family history, I feel my work relates most closely to the idea of a history. Although I feel this is my history, I do not feel it is at all an exclusive one. I have assumed the history of my family as my own and feel it is very personal. The images represent to me various aspects of this history. The images may be of importance to my story or they may be representative of, or related to, family members and their stories. In my mind the images are universal and inclusive rather than specific and exclusive. The places, objects, or people could relate to your family as well as mine. We all have a common history. We need to look back far enough to see it.
In my family humor has its place and so too with my images. Not all the images will be somber or sober. Many of the images are taken at places of importance to me. They include pastoral as well as urban visions. I feel there is a tension between the urban and pastoral, both in my life and perhaps in my work. Some of my work also relates to the spiritual. The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell was a great help in my search to find a personal spirituality.
